Men are significantly underrepresented in primary care mental health services with only 36% of referrals to IAPT services coming from men. There is evidence that this is due to underdiagnosis of common mental health difficulties (stress, anxiety, and low mood) with men’s mental health having to deteriorate severely before they have contact with services. This is shown by the fact men are 50% more likely to be detained and forcibly treated under the Mental Health Act.

In order to deal with this concerning trend in men’s mental health we have set up the Let’s Talk workshop. We hope to break down some of the barriers for men accessing mental health support and to overcome the stigma and shame that often leads men to ignore their mental health until it’s too late. The Let’s Talk workshop offers both practical tools to improve coping and a space in which men can learn they’re not alone in the challenges they face:

Session 1: Introduction to Men’s Workshop & What is stress?
Introduction to the workshop looking at stress and mental health as well as barriers to men accessing mental health support.
Session 2: Introduction to CBT & Boosting Behaviours
Introduction to the basics of CBT and exploration of how small changes in physical activity, diet, sleep, and relaxation can improve wellbeing. Learning about the CBT technique called Behavioural Activation which is all about overcoming low motivation, changing unhelpful habits, and developing more beneficial habits.
Session 3: Managing Worry & Solving Problems
Learning about CBT techniques for facing up to our practical problems and learning ways to reduce excessive worry.
Session 4: Awareness to Action
Reviewing and reflecting on the CBT skills that have been learned so far, thinking about common barriers and problems with implementing CBT skills between sessions, learning ways to engage more with the CBT skills learned through the workshop.
Session 5: Thinking Well
Learning about CBT techniques for coping with negative thoughts and finding a more balanced perspective on the challenges we face.
Session 6: Planning for the Future
Rounding off the workshop with a focus on relapse prevention and ways you can continue to practice all you have learned over the previous sessions.
